Herb Combination Course IntroductionBack to top of page

This course presents a unique new integrated system for creating well-balanced herb combinations that are both effective and safe.

Herb Combining in Western Herbal Medicine

The main problem in the practice of Western herbal medicine has been the lack of a system of theoretical principles for creating a balanced herb combination.

The Galenic theory system has not been in use for two centuries, and attempts to explain herb choice in terms of either Physiomedicalism or conventional Western medicine have not been wholly satisfactory.

A New Integrated System

The principles of herb combination used in this course integrates concepts from Western herbal tradition, Chinese medicine and modern phytochemistry. This new system is developed in Jeremy's ground-breaking text Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine.

Principles of Herb Combination

This course shows how to create balanced Western herb combinations, by choosing herbs according to the principles of:

  • temperature
  • taste
  • actions
  • organs entered

Herb pairs and trios: This course emphasizes the importance of herb pairs and trios as the basic units of herb combination.

3 Different Methods Of Herb Combining

This course is unique in presenting three very different ways of creating a new Western herb combination.

  • Modify a pre-existing combination
  • Create a new combination from singles, pairs, & trios: the working units of a of a herb combination
  • Combine elements of 2-3 pre-existing combinations: this is the advanced art of herb combination

Prerequisite:  Participants on this course must already have completed the 1-day Herb Tasting workshop with Jeremy Ross.

Note:
This 2-day workshop, Creating a Balanced Herb Combination, together with the 1-day Herb Tasting Workshop , make up Module 1 of the Basic 9-day Course.
